Mechanism of Action

Berberine hydrochloride has inhibitory effects on Shigella dysenteriae, Escherichia coli, Streptococcus pneumoniae, Staphylococcus aureus, Streptococcus, Salmonella typhi, and amoebae. Clinically, it is mainly used for intestinal infections and bacillary dysentery. It has also been found to have antiarrhythmic effects. Berberine has strong in vitro and in vivo antitumor activity and can induce B16 cell differentiation; it has a synergistic effect with cytarabine hydrochloride in vitro.

Antibacterial Activity

Berberine has antibacterial activity against hemolytic streptococci, Staphylococcus aureus, Neisseria gonorrhoeae, and Shigella flexneri and Shigella dysenteriae, and enhances phagocytic activity of white blood cells. Berberine hydrochloride (commonly known as berberine hydrochloride) has been widely used to treat gastroenteritis and bacillary dysentery, and also has some efficacy against tuberculosis, scarlet fever, acute tonsillitis, and respiratory infections.

Pharmacological Actions

It has a broad antibacterial spectrum, exhibiting antibacterial activity against a variety of Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria in vitro. It shows strong inhibitory effects against hemolytic streptococci, Staphylococcus aureus, Vibrio cholerae, meningococci, Shigella dysenteriae, Salmonella typhi, and Corynebacterium diphtheriae. At low concentrations, it is bacteriostatic; at high concentrations, it is bactericidal.

It also has some inhibitory effects on influenza viruses, amoebas, leptospires, and certain dermatophytes. In vitro experiments have confirmed that berberine can enhance the phagocytic capacity of leukocytes and the hepatic reticuloendothelial system. Shigella dysenteriae, hemolytic streptococci, and Staphylococcus aureus readily develop resistance to this product. This product does not exhibit cross-resistance with penicillin, streptomycin, etc.
