Thiamin pyrophosphate (TPP) is the coenzyme form of vitamin B1 (thiamine), formed by phosphorylation of vitamin B1 (thiamine). Thiamin pyrophosphate TPP+ is a coenzyme involved in the synthesis and cleavage reactions of carbonyl carbons (aldehydes and ketones) in sugar metabolism, in particular the decarboxylation of alpha-keto acids, where thiamin pyrophosphate induces the cleavage of the carboxyl group to release carbon dioxide through the combination of a carbon atom from the N=C active site with the alpha carbon atom (carbonyl carbon atom).
