Benzoic acid is generally often used as a drug or preservative, has the effect of inhibiting the growth of fungi, bacteria and moulds, and when used medicinally is usually applied to the skin to treat ringworm-type skin diseases. It is used in the synthetic fibre, resin, paint, rubber and tobacco industries. Originally benzoic acid was produced by dry distillation or alkaline hydrolysis of benzoin gum, or by hydrolysis of horse urine acid.
Industrially benzoic acid is produced by oxidising toluene with air in the presence of cobalt, manganese and other catalysts; or decarboxylated by hydrolysis of phthalic anhydride. Benzoic acid and its sodium salt can be used as an antibacterial agent for latex, toothpaste, jam or other foodstuffs, and as a mordant for dyeing and printing.
Uses and functions of Benzoic Acid.
Benzoic acid and its sodium salt are important preservatives for food. Under acidic conditions, the inhibition of yeast and moulds, pH 3 when the antibacterial power is strong, while pH 6 when the effect of many moulds is very poor, so its bacteriostatic optimal pH value of 2.5-4.0.
Benzoic acid is mainly used in the production of sodium benzoate food preservatives, dye intermediates, pesticides, plasticizers, mordant, medicine, spices, but also used as alkyd resin and polyamide resin modifier, used in the production of polyester raw material terephthalic acid and used as rust inhibitor for steel equipment.
Used in the production of pharmaceuticals, dye carriers, plasticisers, spices and food preservatives, etc., and also used to improve the performance of alkyd resin coatings; used as an intermediate in pharmaceuticals and dyestuffs, used in the production of plasticisers and spices, etc., and also used as a rust preventive agent for steel equipment.
