Sodium 3-hydroxybutyrate is widely present in nature, human blood and urine. It exhibits optical activity and can be crystallized in pure state. The hydroxyl group can associate, is easily soluble in water, ethanol, ether, and is easily decomposed by dry steam.
Due to the presence of the polar group OH, its acidity is enhanced, and it is easy to undergo esterification reaction with alcohol or acid. The polymer of sodium 3-hydroxybutyrate can be decomposed by microorganisms in both aerobic and anaerobic conditions, so it can be used in biodegradable plastics, but there is currently no large-scale industrial production.
Uses of Beta-hydroxybutyrate.
The use of sodium 3-hydroxybutyrate has penetrated into all sectors of the national economy and all aspects of people's lives, and it is one of the four pillars in the field of materials. However, the amount of plastic waste generated by large-scale use is also increasing day by day, with a total amount of up to 5 million tons per year.
Various disposable plastic wastes not only affect the appearance of the city, but also pollute the environment and even destroy wild animal and plant resources, becoming an increasingly serious "white pollution". These plastic wastes are buried underground and will not decompose for a long time; incineration will release harmful gases and cause secondary pollution; recycling and reuse are difficult and costly.

Since poly 3-hydroxybutyrate (PHB) can be hydrolyzed into small molecules by lipase and then further assimilated by microorganisms, it is the main component of biodegradable plastics.
