Doxycycline hydrochloride is a semi-synthetic tetracycline antibiotic that penetrates cell membranes and binds to the 30S ribosomal subunit, interfering with tRNA/mRNA interactions and ultimately inhibiting protein synthesis. As a broad-spectrum antibiotic and bacteriostatic agent, this antibiotic is very resistant primarily to bacteria that cause respiratory tract infections including Mycoplasma pneumoniae and Haemophilus influenzae. It also treats infections caused by Chlamydia, Rickettsia, and certain spirochetes, and has antiprotozoal and anthelmintic properties.

Uses and functions of Doxycycline hyclate.

Doxycycline Hydrochloride is commonly used for the treatment of small animal infections caused by a number of different microorganisms, including Borrelia, Leptospira, Rickettsia, Chlamydia, Mycoplasma, Bartonella and Bordetella.It is mainly used for the treatment of respiratory tract, urinary tract and biliary tract infections caused by sensitive bacteria. The antimicrobial spectrum is basically the same as tetracycline and oxytetracycline, and the in vivo and external antimicrobial power is stronger than that of tetracycline. Microorganisms have close cross-resistance to this product with tetracycline and hygromycin. It is well absorbed orally.

Mainly used for sensitive Gram-positive bacteria and Gram-negative bacilli caused by upper respiratory tract infections, tonsillitis, biliary tract infections, lymphadenitis, cellulitis, chronic bronchitis in the elderly, etc., but also used in the treatment of typhus, Qiangcheng disease, mycoplasma pneumonia, etc.. It can also be used for the treatment of cholera, as well as for the prevention of falciparum malaria and leptospirosis infection.

Physiological Effect of Doxycycline hyclate.

Tetracycline antibiotics are bacteriostatic antibiotics that inhibit protein synthesis by reversibly binding to the 30S ribosomal subunit of sensitive bacteria, thereby preventing its binding to aminoacyl transfer RNA. It has also been suggested that tetracyclines reversibly bind to the 50S subunit and alter the permeability of the cell membrane of sensitive bacteria, and can also inhibit protein synthesis in mammalian cells at high concentrations.

In dogs and cats, the most common adverse reactions to oral administration of doxycycline hydrochloride were vomiting, diarrhoea and loss of appetite.
