Of the salts of ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid, the disodium salt is the most important. It is an important complexing agent. Used in chemical copper plating, gold plating, lead-tin alloy plating, electrochemical polishing of steel parts and silver plating of copper parts before the solution, can also be used instead of EDTA-Na.
It is also used in detergent, liquid soap, shampoo, agricultural chemical spray, bleaching and fixing solution for colour photographic material processing, water purification agent, PH adjusting agent, coagulant inhibitor and so on. In styrene-butadiene rubber polymerisation with the reduction of the reduction of the initiation system, disodium EDTA as part of the active agent, mainly used to complex ferrous ions, control the speed of polymerisation reaction.

Sodium chloroacetate is condensed with ethylenediamine and acidified to obtain ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid, which is then neutralised with sodium hydroxide. Dissolve the crude product in 10 times water, add equal volume of ethanol to precipitate disodium salt, then filter and wash.
