Uses of Tetraethylammonium bromide.
Like tetraethylammonium chloride and tetraethylammonium iodide, TEAB has been used as a source of tetraethylammonium ions in many clinical and pharmacological studies, and is studied clinically for its ganglion blocking properties. Although it is now largely no longer used as a drug, it is still used in physiological studies for its ability to block K+ channels in various tissues.

In a 250mL three-necked flask equipped with a reflux condenser and a stirrer, add 7mL (5g, 0.05mol) of triethylamine, 4mL (5.5g, 0.05mol) of ethyl bromide and 20mL of 1,2-dichloroethane or benzene. Reflux and heat for 1.5 to 2h. After the reaction solution is cooled, crystals are precipitated, filtered, washed twice with a small amount of 1,2-dichloroethane or benzene, dried and stored in a desiccator. The yield is 8 to 10g.
