L-menthol is a flavor monomer widely used in food, beverage, cosmetics, pharmaceuticals and other fields. According to a report published by Xinsiye Industry Research Center, the global annual demand for L-menthol is about 40,000 tons, of which food-grade applications are the most widely used.
L-Menthol can be divided into D/ L-Menthol and L-Menthol, of which L-Menthol is more widely used. Currently, the global menthol production capacity is mainly concentrated in overseas enterprises such as BASF, DZX, Takasago, etc., of which DZX is the world's largest supplier of L-menthol, with a production capacity of about 10,000 tons.
China is the world's largest consumer of menthol, but also the traditional production of L-menthol, but currently China's synthetic menthol are imported from foreign companies. In the future, chemical synthesis of L-menthol will become the key development direction, because the chemical method is lower cost and can maintain stable production, independent of seasonal and climatic influences.
Uses and Function of Menthol Crystals.

Menthol is an edible spice allowed to be used in China, mainly used for flavoring toothpaste, candy and beverage. The dosage is 1100mg/kg in chewing gum, 400mg/kg in candy, 130mg/kg in baked goods, 68mg/kg in ice cream and 35mg/kg in soft drinks according to the normal production needs.

Menthol is naturally present in peppermint oil, with a content of up to 80%, and it can be singly isolated from peppermint oil industrially. Menthol crude oil will be frozen to a 20 ℃, separated from the crystallization of crude menthol; the mother liquor will be further frozen to -40 ℃, can also be separated from a part of the crude menthol. Crude menthol was melted by heating, depressurized to remove water, and filtered while hot. Cooled to about 0 ℃, standing 7 ~ 9d, separated from the crystallization, 42 ℃ drying 24h, drying to room temperature is the finished product.
