Main Sources

Phospholipids and proteins are the main components of cell membranes. Egg yolks are rich in lecithin, which is also found in milk, animal brains, bone marrow, heart, lungs, liver, kidneys, as well as soybeans and yeast. In the body, lecithin is mostly bound to proteins, existing as fat-proteins (lipoproteins). Therefore, lecithin exists abundantly in nature, and it is recommended that people consume a wide variety of foods.

Nutritional Benefits

1. Human Nutritional Needs

90% of the exogenous choline required by the human body is provided by lecithin. Lecithin provides choline with two major benefits: firstly, unlike free choline, it is not degraded into methylamine by intestinal microorganisms; secondly, choline is synthesized in the liver and other fibrous tissues through the continuous methylation of phosphatidylcholine (PE), and this synthesis process takes time. Therefore, when dietary choline is insufficient, the body's endogenous lecithin (PC) resources can supplement the body's needs.

2. Regulation of Serum Lipids

Regulating serum lipid levels means lowering cholesterol levels, protecting the liver, improving memory, strengthening immunity, and enhancing anti-fatty liver activity.

3. Effects of Cystic Fibrous Degeneration on Fat Absorption

Cystic fibrosis is an exocrine gland disorder, generally caused by limited lipids in the body and insufficient pancreatic lipase, bile salts, and sodium bicarbonate reserves.

As a result, it severely affects fat absorption, with 30%–60% of ingested fat being malabsorbed, thus causing steatorrhea. Lysophosphatidylcholine can translocate ingested fats, binding monoglycerides and fatty acids in a eutectic matrix. It becomes more easily absorbed in the presence of sodium bicarbonate ions and bile salts.

4. Healthy Heart

It can regulate cholesterol levels in the body, effectively lowering cholesterol, reducing high blood lipids, and decreasing the incidence of coronary heart disease.

5. Beneficial to the Brain

Lecithin accounts for approximately 17%–20% of the mass of brain nerve cells. Choline is a basic component of soybean lecithin. A sufficient supply of lecithin ensures that choline combines with acetyl in the body to synthesize acetylcholine, a neurotransmitter in the brain, thereby increasing brain cell activity and improving memory and intelligence.

Lecithin has emulsifying and fat-decomposing properties, which can improve blood circulation, improve serum lipids, remove peroxides, lower cholesterol and triglyceride levels in the blood, reduce the residence time of fat on the inner walls of blood vessels, promote the dissipation of atherosclerotic plaques, and prevent cholesterol-induced damage to the vascular endothelium. Taking lecithin has significant effects on high blood lipids and high cholesterol, thus preventing and treating arteriosclerosis (hypertension, myocardial infarction, cerebral hemorrhage).

6. Softens Skin:

Lecithin is an essential substance for every cell in the human body. A deficiency reduces the skin's regenerative capacity, leading to rough skin and wrinkles. Appropriate lecithin intake ensures skin regeneration, and its good hydrophilic and lipophilic properties contribute to a radiant complexion. Furthermore, the inositol contained in lecithin is a major nutrient for hair, inhibiting hair loss and gradually turning gray hair black.

7. Delays Aging:

As people age, memory declines, partly due to insufficient acetylcholine levels. A decrease in the neurotransmitter acetylcholine in the brain is a major cause of Alzheimer's disease; acetylcholine is an essential compound for information transmission in the nervous system. Furthermore, choline is a basic component of lecithin. An adequate supply of lecithin ensures that there is enough choline in the body to combine with acetyl in the body to form acetylcholine, thus providing the brain with sufficient information transmission substances. The brain can directly absorb lecithin and choline from the blood and quickly convert them into acetylcholine. Long-term lecithin supplementation can slow down the process of memory decline and prevent or delay the onset of Alzheimer's disease.

Lecithin

Basic Dosage Forms

Industrial-grade lecithin is mainly available in three dosage forms: liquid, granules, and powder. Liquid lecithin has a concentration of around 60%, while granules and powders can reach over 95%.

Popular lecithin products are primarily available in soft capsules and granules, with a smaller number also available in tablets and powders.

Lecithin soft capsules are made by diluting liquid lecithin with glycerin or soybean oil and then encapsulating it in gelatin. While convenient to take, they have a lower content of active ingredients, generally less than 60%, and contain more food additives. Therefore, they are cheaper, but require a higher dosage. This is the dosage form used by most brands of lecithin.

Lecithin granules are primarily made by directly repackaging granular lecithin products, or by adding granulating agents to reduce viscosity before repackaging. Due to their high effective content (usually greater than 95%, and up to 98%) and the use of few or no food additives, they offer higher absorption efficiency and are considered healthier for the human body. Compared to low-purity lecithin soft capsules, which contain large amounts of oil and can only be swallowed, lecithin granules have unique advantages such as high purity, oil-free formula, and the ability to be chewed. However, they are relatively expensive. Therefore, there are fewer brands of lecithin granules available.

Production Processes

Lecithin production generally employs the following processes:

1. Ethanol Extraction: The principle is that lecithin is soluble in ethanol, while other phospholipids, such as cephalin and inositol phospholipids, are insoluble in ethanol.

2. Column Chromatography: The principle is based on the different adsorption capacities of adsorbents for cephalin, inositol phospholipids, and lecithin.

3. Supercritical Co2 Extraction: The principle is based on the abnormal equilibrium behavior and transport properties of supercritical Co2 with lecithin. Different components are separated under varying temperature and pressure.

4. Membrane Separation: The principle is based on the different molecular weights of lecithin, cephalin, and inositol phospholipids formed in different solvents for separation. For example, passing a phospholipid solution dissolved in an ethane-isopropanol mixture through a polypropylene semi-permeable membrane can increase the lecithin content from 25% to 51%. Recovering the solution flowing through the membrane can significantly improve the purity of lecithin. However, this method is not very mature and cannot distinguish components with similar molecular weights. Currently, it is limited to laboratory use.
