Uses and functions of Emodin.

Rhodopsin is a natural compound extracted from rhubarb, thuja and other herbs, with a variety of pharmacological effects including anti-inflammatory, antiviral and anti-tumour. Rhubarbine is mainly used as a refractory, anti-inflammatory, antimutagenic, antiseptic, anticarcinogenic (chest), antiulcer, antiviral,diarrhoeal, gonadotropic, immunosuppressive, insecticide, laxative, antispasmodic, and haemostatic agent.

Physical and Chemical Properties of Emodin.

The scientific name of rhubarb is 1,3,8-trihydroxy-6-methylanthraquinone. Molecular formula C15H10O5,molecular weight 270.24, free and glycoside form in the rhizome and root of Polygonum palmatum, Rheum palmatum, Rheum tangutum. Orange-yellow crystal. Melting point 256～257℃. Can sublimate in vacuum (1,600 Pa). Soluble in ethanol, sodium hydroxide, sodium carbonate, ammonia in aqueous solution, slightly soluble in ether, chloroform, carbon tetrachloride, benzene, almost insoluble in water. Its triacetate is yellow crystal, melting point 197℃. Its 3-methyl ether (also known as rhodopsin methyl ether) is deep red needle-like crystals, melting point 207 ℃. Can be extracted from plants or through chemical synthesis. Aloe vera rhubarb is one of the main components of the essential oil of Aloe vera, which exists in Aloe vera in free state, or exists in rhubarb, senna and Aloe vera as ligand.

Rhodopsin is widely found in plant-based laxatives such as the rhizomes of rhubarb, the bark and root bark of Salvia divinorum, and the seeds of cassia. Rhodopsin can be extracted from the rhizome of Rheum palmatum.Rhubarb can also be prepared by synthesis, e.g. from 2-methylanthraquinone, or from 3,5-dinitrobenzoic anhydride and m-cresol.
