D-galactose is a component of sugars such as agar, plant gum, viscose, raffinose, lactose, and melibiose. It exists in animal materials such as snail protein glands, frog eggs, and brain nerve tissue as galactoside and galactose anhydride molecules. It is found in milk in its free state. It combines with glucose to form lactose. Mucic acid can be obtained after oxidation with nitric acid.

Uses and functions of D-galactose.
As a component of galactosyltransferase labeling buffer, supplemented for growth of lactobacilli in MRS broth, and to induce expression of uncoupling proteins (UCPs) in yeast transformation.
