Radish thioside is a naturally occurring compound found in cruciferous vegetables, especially broccoli, and is a precursor to radish thiols, which have anticancer properties. It is stored in the vesicles of plant cells and is converted to sulphur-containing substances, mainly radish thiols, only when the plant cell tissues are destroyed.
Radish thioside effectively inhibits a group of Gram-negative and Gram-positive bacteria, such as Escherichia coli, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, Enterococcus faecalis, Staphylococcus aureus, or Serratia marcescens, and exhibits anti-Helicobacter pylori (HP) activity both in vivo and in vitro.
It has been shown that radicicchioidin reduces HP colonisation by increasing the body's protection against oxidative stress and inflammation through the targeted regulation of the transcription factor Nrf2.
